Matt & Simone | New Orleans Wedding

One of my favorite things about the past year was that I got to travel to some pretty great places for work.  When Matt contacted me about coming down to New Orleans to shoot his wedding, I was jazzed up, man!  I'd never been there before, but have long been obsessed with everything about the place.  And I wasn't disappointed; I straight up fell in love.  I could go on and on, but I think it's probably best to do a separate post JUST about New Orleans and why I think it might be my favorite city in America.  For now though, check out Matt and Simone's amazing wedding at the Kingsway House in the historic French Quarter.

Eric & Sarah | Great Smoky Mountain Wedding

I should start by saying that Eric and Sarah here are friends of mine.  Eric is an incredibly talented playwright that I've gotten the good fortune to know through the NYC indie theater scene (I'm also an actor.  Maybe you didn't know that, that's ok) and I met Sarah once Eric has cast her in one of his shows.  She's a super talented actress and an all-around quirky, good-hearted, funny and genuine person.  When they asked me to photograph their wedding in Cataloochee, North Carolina I was incredibly honored and crazy stoked.  Knowing them, I knew that their wedding would be wonderful to shoot AND I would get to do it in a gorgeous part of the country that I'd never been to before.  That's what they call a WIN-WIN, people. Everything about this place charmed the socks off of me.  The Balsam Mountain Inn, where most of us stayed and they both got ready, is pretty much the most adorable place ever.  And the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is, in a word, awesome.  And Sarah's family has a deep history with the area...I mean, she got baptized right there at the Palmer Chapel in the middle of Cataloochee when she was a kid.  How great is that?

Going in I knew that this was going to be a fun event filled with lots of people that I know and love, but what I didn't count on was this; I was just flat-out moved by the whole weekend.  These two people just couldn't be more right for each other and that came through in every aspect of their day.  There was a palpable happiness in the air.  Everyone gathered was so genuinely excited for them that it made me, well...I guess I'll say "thankful".  Thankful that I get to do this for a living, to be there during one of the happiest moments in people's lives, but most of all thankful that I get to recognize it in my own life.  I'm lucky enough to have been with my wife Morgan for a long time; and every wedding I shoot I feel like I can see a bit of my own experience within my clients'.  Sure, it's just one day, but it's an important one.  And I think the more you can recognize and learn something about yourself through other people, the better off you are as a person.

So that's my rant.  And I bet you just wanted to look at some pictures.

Preview | Eric and Sarah's Smoky Mountain Wedding

There are some weddings that you go to where everything just feels RIGHT.  I don't mean that the venue has to be beautiful and all the details have to be perfect (although in this case both of those things were true), I mean that there is an overwhelming feeling between everyone involved that these two people are truly meant to be together, have tremendous amounts of love for each other and everything is playing out exactly as it should.  There were big, beautiful emotions flying all over the place; you'd have to be made of tougher stuff than I not to get swept up in it all. I couldn't be happier for Eric and Sarah.  Congrats to you both and thank you for reminding me what I love about doing what I do.  Getting to be there and document such a great day is a thrill.  THANK YOU.

Oh, and remember how I said the venue was beautiful...I think that may have been an understatement.  How awesome is this?!  Cataloochee, North Carolina for the win.

San Antonio Wedding | The Koehler House

This was my second time shooting a wedding in San Antonio and it was just as fun as the first!  Adam and Derya had originally planned for their wedding to be in Brooklyn, but when a change of plans moved the event to San Antonio, I gotta admit, I was jazzed!  If for no other reason than I got my Tex-Mex fix at Mi Tierra's.  Enchiladas.  Michiladas.  Queso.... Sorry, drifted off there for a second.  Now I'm back.

Many things stick out as being special about Adam and Derya's day.  Derya's dress being designed and made by her mother, all of Derya's DIY touches (of which there was an impromptu song about at the reception---it was awesome, you had to be there!), to the stunning late afternoon light that bathed over everyone during the ceremony.  This couple could give a master class in putting together a wedding at this point.

Congratulations, Adam and Derya.  And until next time, San Antonio.
