Cobble Hill Engagement | Rebecca & Andrew

Let's take a short trip back in time to Rebecca and Andrew's Cobble Hill engagement shoot! It was my last one of 2014 and we couldn't have asked for more perfect late fall weather in NYC.  Plus, how great is that coat that Rebecca has on??  Super cool. Looking forward to seeing these two again in Pennsylvania for their wedding!  Thanks guys!

A Chinese-Fusion Wedding | Eric & Jacquelyn

I loved this two day Chinese-fusion wedding that Eric and Jackie had.  We spent the first day in Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn at Frankies Sputino, which is hard to beat, then the next back in Manhattan at the Golden Unicorn in Chinatown.  Some serious ground was covered and since these two are a complete pleasure to be around, it was non-stop good times!  Thanks Eric and Jackie!

Williamsburg, Brooklyn Wedding | Arlyss & Yusha

Many thanks and high fives to Arlyss and Yusha for having me there for their Williamsburg, Brooklyn wedding!  I loved shooting with these two, plus we were right in my backyard over in Williamsburg.  What's not to love?  It's always a treat to shoot getting ready photos over at the Wythe Hotel and the Aurora just down the street was a great venue if you're out there looking for one. Again, thank you, thank you and thanks to these two.  Enjoy.

Heath & Olivia | Ft. Greene, Brooklyn

Ok, so I've been really bad at keeping up with blog posts.  I guess it takes something like my photos appearing in a MAJOR PUBLICATION to get me to talk about stuff.  There are actually two of these updates where that is concerned, but many of the photos are still under disclosure for one of them, so this gets shared first! I shared a preview photo awhile back from Olivia and Heath's Brooklyn winter wedding....remember way back to when it was snowing like crazy here in NYC?  Waaaay back in February?  It was my first wedding of 2014 and it turned out to be a great one.  So much so that the folks over at Australia's Bride Magazine decided to feature it in one of their Destination issues!  I was really only expecting a small photo blurb so I was really surprised and excited that they did a three page spread out of it.

So since it's already out in the world in print, it's about time it ended up on my blog.  Enjoy Heath and Olivia's winter Brooklyn wedding at iCi Restaurant....

Eric & Jackie | Prospect Heights Engagement

I just shot Eric and Jackie's wedding this week, but never got around to blogging their engagement shoot.  So I'm gonna do that now.  It was a short and sweet shoot, one of my favorites of the year so far!  Plus it never hurts that we got to shoot and hang out right here in my own neighborhood.  Bonus! Here's a sidebar for any camera nerds---this was my first shoot to really play with my new (to me) Nikon D4.  I'm not usually into writing much about gear, but I'm totally in love with this camera, guys.  I've shot with a D800 and D700 for years, both great cameras that I get wonderful results from.  So why do I freaking drool over my D4?  Auto focus.  It's just so much better than any camera I've ever used.  I have so many more keepers because it just plain works and gets out of my way.  Plus the ISO at 3200 and up is WAY more pleasing to me than on the D800.  That's huge when you're shooting in as many dark venues as I do.

I didn't go whole hog and get the new D4s since I nabbed a great deal on this refurbished D4, but I don't regret it in the least.  It's a good feeling too, since I feel like so many other photographers I know are making the move for smaller, mirrorless cameras and leaving behind their monster DSLRs.  I totally get it and for some scenarios I think it's a smart move.  For shooting weddings though, I can't live without my DSLRs.  I want a camera that makes me feel confident that I can get the shot.  For me, the Nikon D4 does that.

Huzzah.

New Personal Work

I've been pushing myself recently to get out there and shoot a bit more personal work; it's a good habit to get into and I don't do it nearly often enough.  The images here started with one thing---a great vintage Bill Blass dress.  It used to belong to my wife's mother and I wanted to have Morgan wear it in the photos.  So we started with wardrobe, plus I brought on Ana Marie Salamat for hair/makeup, and I had another friend come in as a lighting assistant.  Small crew.  The day prior I scouted my neighborhood in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and settled on a location along the promenade of Eastern Parkway.  I wanted images that had a slightly noir quality, a cinematic drama to them.  I also knew I wanted to use both the sun and soft studio light since I've been more and more interested in outdoor location photography and the challenges that lie within that. These first two shots had been merely to test and tweak light.  The sun was creating a nice rim and I wanted to angle my flash to come in from the front, but the same side of the frame as the sun.  That way there is beautiful soft light on the face, but it doesn't feel weirdly unmotivated.  It had just the cinematic feel that I was looking for.

For the bulk of our shooting I directed Morgan to create a character that might possibly be in a lot of trouble.  I didn't want to define it too closely, but I wanted the sense that there was urgency involved in where she was headed and that she could possibly run into the wrong people along the way.  Movement and quiet tension.

To top off the day, we found a simple location on the way home and couldn't resist getting a few more shots in while Morgan had this great get up on!

Michael & Jessica | The Green Building, Brooklyn

Jessica and Michael are two cool customers.  I loved shooting their wedding at The Green Building for a lot of reasons.  First, both of them just have great style, from Jessica's vintage dress to Michael's killer midnight blue tux, they both looked top notch.  On top of that, they are as pleasant and easy-going as it gets and they were a joy to work with! Now let's take a look back; it was a cool, brisk day and the date was October 25, 2013....
